Precipita’s crowdfunding campaign provides funding for research on LGMD-1F Muscular Dystrophy and AIDS

‘- Achieved € 10,740 out of the total € 40,000 required for a year

– Conquistando Escalones has already paid more than € 120,000 to researchers

– More than € 200,000 are needed from now and until finishing 2018

90 days ago a crowdfunding campaign was launched on the Precipita Platform (belonging to the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology of the Ministry of Economy and Industry) in which it was intended to raise funds for the part of the research that seeks to find out more about the relationship of suffering our Limb-girdle Muscular Dystrophy 1F  and why the same genetic mutation that causes it to us make us immune to HIV and therefore, find a treatment that benefits both ailments and in the end, help millions as explained by the person responsible for that research, Dr. José Alcamí, director of the Unit of AIDS Immunology of the Carlos III Institute of Madrid.

A minimum of € 9,000 was set to be carried out and an optimum of € 25,000, with a real and final cost of € 40,000 for one year of that part of the project, including generation of cell lines in the laboratory, molecular characterization and analysis of drugs to try to block the effects of the disease as well as new therapeutic targets against it. And mainly,  the payment of the full-time postdoctoral researcher for this purpose. Finally, € 10,740 has been raised thanks to Precipita, so the Conquistando Escalones association will continue to seek funds to cover the rest needed to reach € 40,000.

The Unit of AIDS Immunopathology of the Institute of Health Carlos III of Madrid is one of the parts of the Medical Alliance of researchers of several disciplines, who have joined efforts to carry out this ambitious project of investigation, in which, to be able to understand more this genetic mutation and help cure the LGMD1F, curb with new treatments AIDS and understand and achieve treatments for other rare diseases similar to the aforementioned we suffer.

Currently, and in less than two years since the founding of the association, it has been already paid more than € 120,000 to researchers who work with us and for the rest of 2017 and 2018 we will need to raise more than € 200,000 so these advances do not stop.

That is why, from Conquistando Escalones association, in addition to thanking the team of Dr. Alcamí for their efforts these months and to the responsible for the Spanish Foundation for Science and the Precipita Platform for their tireless work to help us, we want to appeal to all the ranks of society, starting with government institutions and large companies. Despite our limited number of people and health and mobility issues, we will continue to search for funds to cover research that not only seeks to save the lives of our family, but more than 30 million people worldwide. And we need your help.
