Celebrating a Decade of Progress with a Special Campaign to Drive the Cure

A decade ago, we had neither a name for our disease—Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy 1F/D2 (LGMDD2)—nor an understanding of how it worked. Even less did we have hope for a treatment. Now, after ten years filled with breakthroughs and solidarity, we are launching a special campaign: “10 Years, 10 Steps.” Its goal is to continue funding medical research aimed at finding a treatment and cure for both LGMDD2 and HIV.
“Our lives depend on it“, states Abrahán Guirao, President of Conquistando Escalones. The message we want to share is clear: “We need you to be part of the movement that will help stop LGMDD2 and HIV—because only with your support can we keep conquering steps.”
The campaign is structured into ten steps, grouped into three major challenges:
1. Slowing down the disease – Ensuring that medical research into treatments for LGMDD2 continues. Since there is currently no cure, developing palliative treatments is the key to improving patients’ quality of life.
2. Getting closer to a cure – Advancing genetic editing to correct the defect that causes LGMDD2. Thanks to our natural immunity to HIV, the discoveries made could also be applied to HIV patients.
3. Starting clinical trials in patients – Testing the most promising drugs that have shown effectiveness in the lab to combat the disease.
