Abrahan and Anabel, life stories at the XXXIII National Congress of Neuromuscular Diseases

The president of the Conquistando Escalones Association, Abrahán Guirao, was invited together with the publicist and creator of content on social networks, Anabel Domínguez, to give a talk at the XXXIII National Congress of Neuromuscular Diseases, organized by the ASEM Federation last 4 and November 5.

Abrahán and Anabel, who offered their presentation under the title “Testimonies and life history”, wanted to present to the attendees and those who followed the online congress their experiences as affected by Limb-girdle Muscular Dystrophy type 1F/D2 the first and due to lack of Calpaína, the publicist. Some positive testimonies, full of optimism and in a humorous key where they took a tour of their experiences in the first person: from how they remember it when they were children to how they accepted the disease and learned to live with it.

Thus, Guirao indicated that, based on his own experience, it is better to “give children information and not treat it as a taboo subject”, even so the president of Conquistando Escalones pointed out that he has always lived it with “resilience“. Something to which Domínguez added, “I did know that I had a disease since I was a child and, even so, it was difficult for me to accept that, at some point, disability would come and, above all, I struggled a lot with myself in adolescence.”

What both speakers placed special emphasis on was the acceptance of the disease is fundamental, it is not easy, “having a neuromuscular is a bitch” and it costs but “when you reach the top of the mountain and, you can see the disease from above , the views are much better than you expected” explained Anabel. A comparison with which Abrahán totally agrees to which he added that “you have to accept yourself and your environment will help you and is more than willing to help you than you think; and if he doesn’t, I change the environment because it’s not the one you deserve, “concluded the president. Everything, sprinkled with anecdotes told with humor of what it means for them to go to the movies, the circus or a concert.

Finally, both wanted to send a positive message and encouraged everyone to accept the canes; the scooters; wheelchairs… «they are all elements at our disposal that, contrary to what it may seem, make us free, much freer».
