José Manuel Esteban, president of Rotary Club Vila-real, will cycle to Paris to benefit Conquistando Escalones

The president of the Rotary Club Vila-real, José Manuel Esteban, is launching a charity event to benefit the Conquistando Escalones Association. This is an international sporting initiative whose promoter has set himself the goal of completing the 1,300 kilometres separating Vila-real from Paris by bicycle without logistical support, with a tent and carrying only the essentials, and that interested people or companies can sponsor the kilometres of the journey. The challenge will take place next August and collaborating is very simple. The organisers of this curious event have created a campaign on the migranodearena.org website in which, from just two euros, you can sponsor one kilometre. The person who donates 10 euros will sponsor 5 kilometres; with 20 €, 10 kilometres and so on. And how does this contribution become support for research? With a donation of two euros (1 kilometre of the route) 8 minutes of medical research carried out by the Translational Genomics laboratory of the University of Valencia, directed by Professor Rubén Artero, are covered. Thus, if the 2,600 euros set are raised, the Conquistando Escalones Association will be able to cover 10,400 minutes of research.

Esteban met Abrahán Guirao, president of Conquistando Escalones, last summer thanks to the filming of the series Abrahán con ene. From that moment on, he knew he wanted to promote some initiative in favour of the Association and, therefore, of medical research into Limb-girdle Muscular Dystrophy 1F/D2 (LGMDD2) to find a definitive treatment or cure for this disease, which is considered rare and which, in turn, will serve as a step towards a more effective treatment against AIDS, since the mutation that causes LGMDD2 makes those who suffer from it immune to HIV, so the findings on one disease benefit the other. “Like life itself and like Abraham, this action involves conquering a double challenge, the sporting and the social, which allows the development of treatments for the disease,” says the president of Rotary Vila-real.
